Born in 1968, Mae Boo Jhan is the oldest member of the herd. In her younger years, she worked in the logging industry in the mountains of Chiang Mai before being forced into tourist camps, where she spent many years carrying visitors and enduring a harsh life of chains, hard labour, and constant handling. Several of her calves were taken from her and sold to other camps, leaving deep emotional scars.
In 2016, Mae Boo Jhan was finally rescued and returned to the jungle, where she now lives peacefully surrounded by a loving elephant family. Strong-willed yet gentle, she spends her days quietly roaming the forest, foraging on fresh greens, and rediscovering the freedom and calm she was denied for so many years.
